Self-Destructive Deviance: Suicide (Final Semester Paper) Depression is the cause of suicide. This is researched and known to be a myth that everyone believes about suicide. In reality the book or chapter on suicide states depression is a risk factor for suicide as it is often found in people who kill themselves, however this does not mean that depression is the cause of suicide. It goes on to say that there are plenty and other risk factors and depression is not the main cause or actual case for suicide, for example teenagers who have a higher incidence of depression than the elderly, are less likely to kill themselves than are the elderly (p. 144). So if depression is not the cause of suicide, what is? Research states though†¦show more content†¦People are ending their lives every day whether we as a society are aware of it or not. The situation or problem may be temporary but the solution and outcome is always permanent. This affects our society because when hearing about a suicidal incident or if it is someone that was known, it brings curiosity on one to want to know what they could have done to prevent it, or what options are there out there to help and decrease certain deviance behaviors such as this. This self-destruction deviance should not be happening, however it is. Emile Durkheim’s Anomie theory explains it is a condition in which the society provides little moral guidance to individuals; it is basically the analysis of social bonds between an individual and the community. Therefore, suicide relates and affects the society individually and collectively. It’s amazing how in the most prosperous nation on earth, America; research states almost five million of its inhabitants at some time in their lives attempt suicide. Though this is only attempting, every twenty minutes someone is the United States commits suicide. Another interesting fact that astound me was knowing the rates and who were more likely committing and attempting suicide in our society, and it st ated that it is mostly attempted by people in their â€Å"prime of life† which are between the ages of 24 and 44, however suicide is also rising in â€Å"prime of the youth† ages also 15 to 24 years of age.

Technology Advances TECHNOLOGY The technology we have today would of boggled the minds of people from long, long ago. I mean people from B.C. times. When they were around their technology was being able to write, and paint of cave walls, and being able to make spears, bows, and arrows. Then around the Renaissance era (1300s 1600s) we had weapons such as stronger and more efficient bows, straighter sturdier arrows. We had cannons, single shot black powder rifles and pistols, and huge slingshots. Around that time the printing press was just founded, and that was new to everyone. That made making books easier and cheaper, along with buying then also. Now it is the year of 2000. The technology we have now is 100 times better then what they had then. Now instead of just having bows and arrows with a limited pull back weight since they were made of just wood, we have bows that can have an enormous amount of pull back weight. We also have better weaponry. We have rifles that can fire for 1,000s of yards, we have the capability to blow something up on the other side of the world, and we can even totally erase an everything of another country not leaving a trace. But the weapons arent the best type of technology we have. Right at this moment we can talk to someone by just pushing numbers on a phone, dialing up with the internet. Even just about 30 years ago we couldnt even do that we were still having to send mail through the post office by hand writing a note, letter anything. Just think that was only about 30 years ago. Today we can do all of that with just a push of a button or two. We have gone from vinyl records, to 8-tracks, to c assette tapes, and then to compact discs. We can even get music off the internet in the for of mp3s. There isnt anything this day and age we cant do. Even as we speak technology is forming around us. Like when you go buy a computer, with in 3 weeks there is one that is bigger and better then the one you purchased. The bad part in technology is it doesnt always change for the good. Just look at all the bombs everyone on this planet use to kill people. We dont always plan for what we are going to use the new technology for. For example Albert Einstein made fission and fusion but those were used the wrong way and made the nuclier bomb witch killed millions. I would like to close in saying that technology is all around you, it is in everything you do, and everything you see. There isnt a day that goes by with out some form technology being made.
